What is the ASP/CSP certification?

The Associate Safety Professional (ASP) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) are internationally recognized credentials awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). What is the difference between ASP and CSP?

The ASP is a foundational credential that tests core safety principles and is often used as a stepping stone. The CSP is the gold standard, senior-level credential that demands deeper knowledge, 4 years of professional experience, and an existing qualified credential (such as the ASP).

Can I apply directly to CSP without passing by ASP?

Yes, but only if you already hold another BCSP-qualified credential. This includes the Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or the NEBOSH National/International Diploma. If you do not have one of these, you must earn the ASP first.

Which is better: NEBOSH Diploma or CSP?

Both are highly respected, top-tier global qualifications. The NEBOSH Diploma is an academic and structured qualification (often heavily recognized in the UK and Middle East), while the CSP is a professional certification (USA-based) that formally validates your practical experience. Many top safety leaders hold both.

Which NEBOSH Diploma is acceptable for the CSP application?

The BCSP recognizes both the older NEBOSH National/International Diploma and the newer NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals as qualified credentials, allowing you to bypass the ASP.

What's the difference between GSP and ASP?

The Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) is a designation available only to graduates from SH&E degree programs that meet specific BCSP standards (QAP). It allows graduates to bypass the ASP exam when applying for the CSP. The ASP requires passing a rigorous exam.

What are the requirements for the ASP certification?

You must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any field (or an Associate’s in SH&E) and at least 1 year of professional safety experience where safety is at least 50% preventative.

What are the requirements for the CSP certification?

Do I need to renew my CSP certification?

Yes. To maintain the CSP, you must pay an annual renewal fee to the BCSP and earn 25 Recertification points every five years through continuing education and professional practice.

Do I need to renew the ASP to maintain the CSP?

No. Once you achieve the CSP, you do not need to maintain the ASP. The CSP supersedes the ASP.
